Tarps vs. Hybrids vs. Tents

There are some general lessons to be drawn from using tarps vs. tents vs. hybrid systems (tarptents and the like). Tarps set up very quickly (sort of like rapid-prototyping), and are have uses as shelter beyond just sleeping. I’d never set up my tent or tarptent in the middle of the day to avoid a bit of rain, yet with a tarp – it’s no big deal and I’ll do it. On the other hand (and again just like rapid-prototyping), in really awful weather nothing quite beats a properly engineered shelter. Though with care you can set a tarp up to handle almost anything – but that, unlike rapid-prototyping, is more like proper engineering.

  • Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
